It is a French aperitif created in 1846 by the chemist joseph dubonnet.
The drink is made from fortified sweet wine, herbs, spices and quinine. This liquor was created to persuade French foreign legionnaires sent to North Africa to drink quinine (very bitter) and thus fight malaria.
Paradoxes of life, Dubonnet quickly became the quintessential aperitif of the upper classes.
